Narrative:

Smoke and fumes in the cabin noted within 10 minutes of departure from ZZZ. First officer and I were just advising each other of the smoke smell when the flight attendant called on the intercom. She advised us there was visible smoke and fumes throughout the cabin. I advised her we were going back to ZZZ immediately and [to] prepare for landing. I instructed the first officer to [advise ATC] and tell them we wanted to return to ZZZ. Memory action items were accomplished in addition to the cabin smoke/fire QRH checklist while getting instructions from ATC to turn to the field and descend. I had my navigation radio already tuned and the inbound course selected for runway xxr ILS before we departed; so I verified that was still correct. I then concentrated on getting the aircraft configured and slowed so the approach would stay stable and ultimately successful. The landing was normal and upon exiting the runway I set the brake and called the flight attendant to get the status of the cabin. She reported there was no evidence of smoke and that she did not smell the fumes anymore. I elected to taxi back to the gate.
