Narrative:

I approached north bay on a 170 degree heading, following highway 11 at 3500' MSL and attempted my first radio contact with north bay tower about 10 mi out. I had been hearing the tower loud and clear, but my transmitter sidetone was weak and there was no answer. After two more attempts the tower finally heard me and said I was cleared to land on runway 18 and that I was in sight. I landed on runway 18. During the long, slow roll out, I heard no further xmissions so I held well short of runway 26 and attempted to contact the tower with negative results on 118.3 and 121.9. I observed a multi-engine military aircraft make what appeared to be a low approach and go around from what I thought was a gca or an ILS on runway 26. With still no instructions from the tower, I looked directly at the tower cabin attendant and awaited a light signal. There were definitely not any light signals. I was in the middle of what should have been the active runway according to the windsock. I realized I now had no radio (later found to be an intermittent antenna connection). With still no light signals of any kind from the tower, I expedited crossing runway 26 and turned west on the south parallel taxiway. I shut the airplane down in a corner of the area (the whole area was deserted) and waited. About two mins later a small field maintenance veh came up and informed me to please call tower on a telephone. When I called the tower as soon as I could get to a telephone, the tower operator was obviously very upset, very mad, and very sarcastic. He said I had no business entering his control zone west/O a radio. He cut me off when I tried to tell him of any attempts to contact him or that although I had plenty of endurance left, I only had about a 60 mi range and I was committed to his airfield. He also said I would have a flight violation against me. He asked me where I learned to fly, if anyone taught me, and did not allow me to answer. I have been flying since I was 16, I am now 62. There was nothing unsafe in what I did, especially considering the lack of aircraft movement on or around the airport at the time.

Title: SMA LANDS AT ARPT AND LOSES RADIO CONTACT WITH TWR. REPORTER HOLDS SHORT OF INTERSECTING RWY CAUSING A GO AROUND.

AFTER TWO MORE ATTEMPTS THE TWR FINALLY HEARD ME AND SAID I WAS CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 18 AND THAT I WAS IN SIGHT. I LANDED ON RWY 18. DURING THE LONG, SLOW ROLL OUT, I HEARD NO FURTHER XMISSIONS SO I HELD WELL SHORT OF RWY 26 AND ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT THE TWR WITH NEGATIVE RESULTS ON 118.3 AND 121.9. I OBSERVED A MULTI-ENG MIL ACFT MAKE WHAT APPEARED TO BE A LOW APCH AND GO AROUND FROM WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A GCA OR AN ILS ON RWY 26. WITH STILL NO INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE TWR, I LOOKED DIRECTLY AT THE TWR CAB AND AWAITED A LIGHT SIGNAL. THERE WERE DEFINITELY NOT ANY LIGHT SIGNALS. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE ACTIVE RWY ACCORDING TO THE WINDSOCK. I REALIZED I NOW HAD NO RADIO (LATER FOUND TO BE AN INTERMITTENT ANTENNA CONNECTION). WITH STILL NO LIGHT SIGNALS OF ANY KIND FROM THE TWR, I EXPEDITED XING RWY 26 AND TURNED W ON THE S PARALLEL TXWY. I SHUT THE AIRPLANE DOWN IN A CORNER OF THE AREA (THE WHOLE AREA WAS DESERTED) AND WAITED. ABOUT TWO MINS LATER A SMALL FIELD MAINT VEH CAME UP AND INFORMED ME TO PLEASE CALL TWR ON A TELEPHONE. WHEN I CALLED THE TWR AS SOON AS I COULD GET TO A TELEPHONE, THE TWR OPERATOR WAS OBVIOUSLY VERY UPSET, VERY MAD, AND VERY SARCASTIC. HE SAID I HAD NO BUSINESS ENTERING HIS CTL ZONE W/O A RADIO. HE CUT ME OFF WHEN I TRIED TO TELL HIM OF ANY ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT HIM OR THAT ALTHOUGH I HAD PLENTY OF ENDURANCE LEFT, I ONLY HAD ABOUT A 60 MI RANGE AND I WAS COMMITTED TO HIS AIRFIELD. HE ALSO SAID I WOULD HAVE A FLT VIOLATION AGAINST ME. HE ASKED ME WHERE I LEARNED TO FLY, IF ANYONE TAUGHT ME, AND DID NOT ALLOW ME TO ANSWER. I HAVE BEEN FLYING SINCE I WAS 16, I AM NOW 62. THERE WAS NOTHING UNSAFE IN WHAT I DID, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THE LACK OF ACFT MOVEMENT ON OR AROUND THE ARPT AT THE TIME.
