Narrative:

Landing runway 28R at sfo. Tower asked us to expedite clearing runway 28R because widebody transport was only 2 mi behind us. The tower controller said to 'use echo or the high speed to clear.' he said this during the flare or just after T/D when we were very focused on landing and very busy. I looked up from calling out altitudes and speeds to see a big east sign just then what appeared to be the high speed. I said to the captain 'there is echo.' he braked harder and we turned off at what appeared to be echo but what in fact was runway 1L. We looked down the runway and there was an large transport in position for takeoff. The tower told us to hold there, a landing aircraft on runway 28L rolled past and we were cleared to cross runway 28L to the right and clear on echo to the ramp. There was never a conflict, and tower thanked us for expediting the clearing of runway 28R.
