Narrative:
Climbing out; departure sent us to center. Our instructions from [departure] were to level at 10;000. I checked in with center at 9;500 feet. We already had altitude capture as I was speaking. Center specifically told us to continue our climb to FL230. I responded with 'company XXX; climb and maintain FL230.' at approximately 14;000 feet; center instructed us to climb to FL230. I responded that we were out of 14;000 climbing FL230 per our original instructions. At that point; the controller became upset and started yelling at us that it was for another [company] aircraft to climb to FL230. There were no other [company] aircraft on frequency.
