Narrative:

On ILS approach to runway 23 mmu gear lever was put down, gear transited and showed green (about 5 mi from airport, 2000' MSL, about 135 mph). Light checked 2 mi on final, green, vus check in mirror as down. Over fence at about 105 mph, flare to 85-90 mph, no drift. Immediately after T/D, felt shudder for 1-2 seconds then grinding as gear collapsed, slid to stop. No injuries. I write this mainly to put on record a gear mechanic failure. Rated pilot passenger in right seat verifies gear down light was green, switch down. After aircraft was lifted on slings gear dropped by gravity, mechanic pulled slightly and gear locked down. Aircraft was then towed to FBO. This rates as an incident and requires no reports. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information. Reporter stated that there has not been any similar events such as this on the type aircraft he had operated on the flight. He cited various magazines that covered operating procedure on this aircraft and nothing was mentioned regarding the gear just collapsing right after landing with the green light on. There were 3 FAA inspectors at the airport when this happened and they performed an immediate investigation on the event. The aircraft was jacked up in the hangar and the gear locked down and indicated down when the battery was turned on. The green light was still operative. No cause was found for failure. Aircraft was not going to be repaired so no special alerts were put out on this. That is why the reporter sent in this report to ASRS. The insurance company paid reporter for his aircraft.

Title: AFTER A NORMAL APCH AND LNDG WITH THE LNDG GEAR GREEN LIGHT ON, AN SMA'S GEAR COLLAPSED ON THE RWY 1 TO 2 SECONDS AFTER TOUCHDOWN.

Narrative: ON ILS APCH TO RWY 23 MMU GEAR LEVER WAS PUT DOWN, GEAR TRANSITED AND SHOWED GREEN (ABOUT 5 MI FROM ARPT, 2000' MSL, ABOUT 135 MPH). LIGHT CHKED 2 MI ON FINAL, GREEN, VUS CHK IN MIRROR AS DOWN. OVER FENCE AT ABOUT 105 MPH, FLARE TO 85-90 MPH, NO DRIFT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER T/D, FELT SHUDDER FOR 1-2 SECS THEN GRINDING AS GEAR COLLAPSED, SLID TO STOP. NO INJURIES. I WRITE THIS MAINLY TO PUT ON RECORD A GEAR MECH FAILURE. RATED PLT PAX IN R SEAT VERIFIES GEAR DOWN LIGHT WAS GREEN, SWITCH DOWN. AFTER ACFT WAS LIFTED ON SLINGS GEAR DROPPED BY GRAVITY, MECH PULLED SLIGHTLY AND GEAR LOCKED DOWN. ACFT WAS THEN TOWED TO FBO. THIS RATES AS AN INCIDENT AND REQUIRES NO RPTS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. RPTR STATED THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY SIMILAR EVENTS SUCH AS THIS ON THE TYPE ACFT HE HAD OPERATED ON THE FLT. HE CITED VARIOUS MAGAZINES THAT COVERED OPERATING PROC ON THIS ACFT AND NOTHING WAS MENTIONED REGARDING THE GEAR JUST COLLAPSING RIGHT AFTER LNDG WITH THE GREEN LIGHT ON. THERE WERE 3 FAA INSPECTORS AT THE ARPT WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND THEY PERFORMED AN IMMEDIATE INVESTIGATION ON THE EVENT. THE ACFT WAS JACKED UP IN THE HANGAR AND THE GEAR LOCKED DOWN AND INDICATED DOWN WHEN THE BATTERY WAS TURNED ON. THE GREEN LIGHT WAS STILL OPERATIVE. NO CAUSE WAS FOUND FOR FAILURE. ACFT WAS NOT GOING TO BE REPAIRED SO NO SPECIAL ALERTS WERE PUT OUT ON THIS. THAT IS WHY THE RPTR SENT IN THIS RPT TO ASRS. THE INSURANCE COMPANY PAID RPTR FOR HIS ACFT.
