Narrative:
During a flight to lga while we were on the left downwind to runway 22 approximately abeam lga at 4000 ft; the first officer spotted what appeared to be a fixed wing drone pass within 30 ft of the aircraft by his estimate. The crew immediately reported the drone to ATC. ATC sent the crew a number to call after the flight for additional details. The captain did not ever see the drone; but the first officer said he only just saw it as it flashed past the aircraft.
