Narrative:

At gate we asked for engine startup and taxi. Ground control cleared us to start up/taxi via alf taxiway to runway 11. I changed frequency (per company procedure) to get takeoff closeout data. At this time, the captain taxied onto runway 11 as cleared. Tower told us that we were not cleared onto runway 11. We questioned controller, saying we were told to taxi via runway 11. After questioning controller a second time, he told us to continue taxiing on runway 11. With a 2-M cockpit crew, it is very important not to leave 1 pilot using a few west/O the other listening. It is very common to be given instruction by controllers during very important phases of flight (landing rollout, takeoff rollout, etc).
