Narrative:

Flight was en route to destination when just prior to crossing fdy VOR, center issued a clearance for us (we thought) to descend and maintain 16000'. The first officer repeated the clearance with our flight # and I descended to 16000'. Upon reaching 16000', center said the clearance was for company traffic and told us to climb back to 17000'. Center then reissued the clearance to company and they acknowledged. The flight proceeded west/O further problems. We believe ATC confused the 2 flts in the same area. No evasive actions were necessary.
