Narrative:

During the arrival to charlotte airport, nc, my aircraft had been cleared direct to hmv VOR. We had been cleared to a lower altitude; FL260 then to FL250. After confirming the altitude cleared to, we started descent, and proceeded to hmv. Upon arrival at the fix, we proceeded on the published arrival (shine 1 arrival clt). The controller then questioned our heading, and we responded that we were established on the arrival, approximately heading 160 degree. The controller then asked if we had received the instructions to maintain heading after reaching hmv VOR. We replied that we did not copy that clearance, or acknowledge it, and asked when we had received the clearance? The controller stated that he issued the clearance when we had been cleared to a lower altitude. We responded that we copied the altitude, but not the heading, and neither pilot had copied it. The controller then vectored us for the spacing he wanted and the rest of the arrival was uneventful. I asked the controller if he would like me to call him and I asked him for his phone number. He responded that it was not necessary, and that he had...'no problem with it.' this situation occurred during a period when traffic was heavy. When the controller gave the clearance, I think two things contributed to this situation, he gave the clearance very quickly, and did not catch that we did not acknowledge the 'maintain present heading after hmv VOR.'

Title: ACR FLT CREW ON PUBLISHED ARR RECEIVED AND ACKNOWLEDGE ONLY PART OF AMENDED CLRNC. HEADING DEVATION.

Narrative: DURING THE ARR TO CHARLOTTE ARPT, NC, MY ACFT HAD BEEN CLRED DIRECT TO HMV VOR. WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO A LOWER ALT; FL260 THEN TO FL250. AFTER CONFIRMING THE ALT CLRED TO, WE STARTED DSNT, AND PROCEEDED TO HMV. UPON ARR AT THE FIX, WE PROCEEDED ON THE PUBLISHED ARR (SHINE 1 ARR CLT). THE CTLR THEN QUESTIONED OUR HDG, AND WE RESPONDED THAT WE WERE ESTABLISHED ON THE ARR, APPROX HDG 160 DEG. THE CTLR THEN ASKED IF WE HAD RECEIVED THE INSTRUCTIONS TO MAINTAIN HDG AFTER REACHING HMV VOR. WE REPLIED THAT WE DID NOT COPY THAT CLRNC, OR ACKNOWLEDGE IT, AND ASKED WHEN WE HAD RECEIVED THE CLRNC? THE CTLR STATED THAT HE ISSUED THE CLRNC WHEN WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO A LOWER ALT. WE RESPONDED THAT WE COPIED THE ALT, BUT NOT THE HDG, AND NEITHER PLT HAD COPIED IT. THE CTLR THEN VECTORED US FOR THE SPACING HE WANTED AND THE REST OF THE ARR WAS UNEVENTFUL. I ASKED THE CTLR IF HE WOULD LIKE ME TO CALL HIM AND I ASKED HIM FOR HIS PHONE NUMBER. HE RESPONDED THAT IT WAS NOT NECESSARY, AND THAT HE HAD...'NO PROB WITH IT.' THIS SITUATION OCCURRED DURING A PERIOD WHEN TFC WAS HEAVY. WHEN THE CTLR GAVE THE CLRNC, I THINK TWO THINGS CONTRIBUTED TO THIS SITUATION, HE GAVE THE CLRNC VERY QUICKLY, AND DID NOT CATCH THAT WE DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THE 'MAINTAIN PRESENT HDG AFTER HMV VOR.'
