Narrative:

Flight from allaire county airport, nj, to chester, ct. After takeoff mcguire approach could not pick-up our transponder code that was given. We recycled to no avail. We were not asked to turn 90 degree for identify but were told to squawk 1200. We then headed direct to deer park VOR but were sited for a TCA intrusion 5 NM south of the field. I think we were 10 NM south of kennedy at 1500' MSL below the TCA. To remedy the possibility of a recurrence I would extend the 70/+05 to 20 NM around each of the 3 airports in the ny, TCA. Had I not been fearful of over-water/low altitude flight I would not have had the tendency to stay so close to land. Had the controller at mcguire approach been more helpful we would have been identify. I will only fly IFR from now on on every flight unless it's less than 20 mins in duration.

Narrative: FLT FROM ALLAIRE COUNTY ARPT, NJ, TO CHESTER, CT. AFTER TKOF MCGUIRE APCH COULD NOT PICK-UP OUR TRANSPONDER CODE THAT WAS GIVEN. WE RECYCLED TO NO AVAIL. WE WERE NOT ASKED TO TURN 90 DEG FOR IDENT BUT WERE TOLD TO SQUAWK 1200. WE THEN HEADED DIRECT TO DEER PARK VOR BUT WERE SITED FOR A TCA INTRUSION 5 NM S OF THE FIELD. I THINK WE WERE 10 NM S OF KENNEDY AT 1500' MSL BELOW THE TCA. TO REMEDY THE POSSIBILITY OF A RECURRENCE I WOULD EXTEND THE 70/+05 TO 20 NM AROUND EACH OF THE 3 ARPTS IN THE NY, TCA. HAD I NOT BEEN FEARFUL OF OVER-WATER/LOW ALT FLT I WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE TENDENCY TO STAY SO CLOSE TO LAND. HAD THE CTLR AT MCGUIRE APCH BEEN MORE HELPFUL WE WOULD HAVE BEEN IDENT. I WILL ONLY FLY IFR FROM NOW ON ON EVERY FLT UNLESS IT'S LESS THAN 20 MINS IN DURATION.
