Narrative:

Approached the airport at far from the southwest. The ATIS indicated winds 190 degrees at 19 KTS (WX bureau noted a gust to 27 KTS for the hour in question). Cleared right base to 21. Shortened approach by turning prior to 45 degrees. 1/4 mi final with moderate turbulence. At 50-20' above T/D had strong crosswind gust that raised the left wing approximately 30 degrees. Reaction was to lower wing and cut power. Also panic and probably kicked right rudder (car braking). The brakes released funny. Multiple tapping required rather than single tap. Inspector noted right brake on impact. Right side pressure was placed upon nose gear which collapsed. The other thing that comes to mind is my dislike of right patterns over left-hand patterns. Instinct should have been to do a go around rather than cut power. Pilot error. No other contributing factors.

Title: PLT INDUCED LOSS OF ACFT CONTROL IN GUST CONDITIONS LEADS TO COLLAPSE OF NOSE WHEEL.

Narrative: APCHED THE ARPT AT FAR FROM THE SW. THE ATIS INDICATED WINDS 190 DEGS AT 19 KTS (WX BUREAU NOTED A GUST TO 27 KTS FOR THE HR IN QUESTION). CLRED RIGHT BASE TO 21. SHORTENED APCH BY TURNING PRIOR TO 45 DEGS. 1/4 MI FINAL WITH MODERATE TURB. AT 50-20' ABOVE T/D HAD STRONG XWIND GUST THAT RAISED THE LEFT WING APPROX 30 DEGS. REACTION WAS TO LOWER WING AND CUT PWR. ALSO PANIC AND PROBABLY KICKED RIGHT RUDDER (CAR BRAKING). THE BRAKES RELEASED FUNNY. MULTIPLE TAPPING REQUIRED RATHER THAN SINGLE TAP. INSPECTOR NOTED RIGHT BRAKE ON IMPACT. RIGHT SIDE PRESSURE WAS PLACED UPON NOSE GEAR WHICH COLLAPSED. THE OTHER THING THAT COMES TO MIND IS MY DISLIKE OF RIGHT PATTERNS OVER LEFT-HAND PATTERNS. INSTINCT SHOULD HAVE BEEN TO DO A GAR RATHER THAN CUT PWR. PLT ERROR. NO OTHER CONTRIBUTING FACTORS.
