Narrative:

Upon being cleared for the approach to (pkb no approach specified) I advised center that I had the airport visually. He again repeated (cleared for approach), none specified. I executed the visibility approach. Upon review of the aim I found that this procedure, (a visibility approach) was not legal with the clearance given. The clearance reading only (cleared for approach to pkb). I believe that what I had done might have been illegal and therefore I consulted the aim for which I found that it was. Even though the WX was cavu. At the time the visibility was executed I was not in radar contact with center and the pkb tower was closed. The flight service station was operating the CTAF.
