Narrative:

On climb out, I was flying and at 10300' noticed I had climbed through my altitude. I pushed the nose over to recover back to my altitude. The aircraft continued to climb to 10500' till it started to level at 10000'. While I initiated the return to my altitude, departure called traffic at 12 O'clock and 11000'. We had the traffic in sight. Supplemental information from acn 142187. At 9700', I observed the copilot trimming for level off at 10000'. I reached for the after takeoff checklist and proceeded to complete it. At which time I heard the altitude alerter and observed the altitude deviation of 500'. Denver center said 'air carrier X maintain 10000''. No evasive maneuver was necessary. 12 O'clock traffic was observed was an air carrier large transport. To avoid this happening in the future, we should maintain assigned altitudes. Also, center should have mentioned our traffic again and reminded us of our altitude.

AT WHICH TIME I HEARD THE ALT ALERTER AND OBSERVED THE ALT DEVIATION OF 500'. DENVER CTR SAID 'ACR X MAINTAIN 10000''. NO EVASIVE MANEUVER WAS NECESSARY. 12 O'CLOCK TFC WAS OBSERVED WAS AN ACR LGT. TO AVOID THIS HAPPENING IN THE FUTURE, WE SHOULD MAINTAIN ASSIGNED ALTS. ALSO, CTR SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED OUR TFC AGAIN AND REMINDED US OF OUR ALT.
