Narrative:

Ground control cleared us to taxi to runway xxr; hold short of runway xxl. Ground control advised us to monitor tower. Switched to tower and we slowly turned at the taxiway and approached the hold line of runway xxl. As we continued to slowly approach [the runway]; I was unsure if we were going to stop; so I asked the captain; 'we're holding short?' while he was monitoring the flight attendant PA. Then I touched his arm and said; 'I think we need to hold short.'the captain stopped and told me to inform tower that we were over the hold short line. Tower had seen us approaching [the runway] and had informed us to hold our position as we came to a stop. I told tower we were over the hold short line; and tower said; 'okay; I'm not using [that runway] right now; so just hold your position; I will have a departure on runway xz.'the captain then informed me that we needed to return to the gate due to a possible flight attendant injury. Requested and received taxi instructions from tower to proceed onto runway xxl and [then] exit and contact ground. Tower asked for the gate return reason; and I told them that it was due to a suspected flight attendant injury.when we cleared the runway; the captain directed me to tell the company to have EMS meet us at the gate; which I did. Ground control asked if we required any assistance; and I relayed to them that we had requested EMS at the gate. Ground advised us that EMS was enroute.
