Narrative:

I was released from the area to complete additional duties. The supervisor had called in sick. Two controllers called in sick and there was weather deviations in the area. A controller had just had an operational error. One controller was called in for overtime. I went back to the area on my own to provide a break and work a session. The sector was busy with bad rides; weather deviations and poor performance. Aircraft were IMC and had deicing on making for poor climb rates.I turned aircraft X to miss a limited data block aircraft eastbound from ZKC at 35000 feet. The aircraft was climbing poorly. ZKC and ZAU were handing me two aircraft at 35000 feet. I turned aircraft X on course and instructed my radar assist to turn the aircraft being worked by ZKC 15 degrees left for the ZAU traffic and to point out aircraft X. I believe I was on the phone coordinating when he was supposed to be pointing out the other aircraft. I believe the radar assist forgot to point out aircraft X to ZKC and the aircraft entered ZKC airspace at 34400 feet. The ZKC sector involved owns 34000 to 35000 feet. I believed all coordination had been accomplished.the sector would have been split if we had a supervisor or controller staffing to accomplish the task. The sector was a 'red' sector on the traffic situational display. Staff the area appropriately or call in additional supervision. I will ensure my radar assist accomplishes tasks as assigned. Make ZKC sector 12 altitude match ZID sector 80. Split sectors when high volume or weather is impacting traffic flow.
