Narrative:

I was waiting for sequence to depart. An aircraft in front of me was cleared from the hold short to take off and I was cleared to pull up and hold short. I pulled up and held short about 30' short of the hold line (perpendicular to the active runway). I received a second instruction to pull up and hold short and wrongly assumed that the controller meant onto the runway and hold for take off. I now believe that he wanted me to pull up closer to the the hold line and not cross it. I crossed the hold line and stopped to check for landing traffic; which there was on short final. The landing aircraft complained about me pulling onto the runway and the controller issued a go around; which was executed swiftly. I was well back from the center line and a landing would have been of no consequence. Fortunately; no accident occurred! I was then cleared for take off. I short; I was confused by a seemingly unnecessary second request to pull up and hold short and assumed he meant onto the runway to hold short. I used prudence once across the hold line by stopping to check for traffic. I will have a meeting with my instructor to discuss hold short versus line up and hold instructions. This was my first time into [this airport] in at least 10 years and I fly out of a non-towered airport most of the time. I will discuss towered airport operations as an additional topic with my CFI.
