Narrative:

On initial climb; cht (cylinder head temperature) #3 rapidly started to climb in yellow. Instructor took controls and lowered pitch to cool motor off. Cht #3 went into the red indication area with engine roughness and instructor declared precautionary landing while turning right crosswind for [the runway] at 700 feet. Instructor reduced power on tight downwind leg to reduce engine roughness and preserve motor and thrust. Cht #3 went offline and back on with red indication multiple times. Instructor landed without airport assistance and taxied to gate with no issue or airport assistance. Aircraft per maintenance log was written up 5 times for same issue.
