Narrative:
While parked on taxiway C short of taxiway B intersection; no. 1 engine at idle; APU running; no. 2 engine shut down; a mylar balloon suddenly appeared floating across the nose of the airplane; floated past the ca windows and moments later a pop was heard and the no. 1 engine instruments decreased and then the eng fail message appeared on the mfd. The engine start lever was placed in the cutoff position. I commanded the start of the no. 2 engine. We reviewed the engine failure QRH. We taxied to the gate uneventfully.
