Narrative:

I was brought a 737 with a write-up of broken emergency button on captain O2 mask. In debriefing crew I asked pilot when he first noticed it. He asked what difference it made. I told him that if it was found previously; it should have been reported there. He told me in that case he just found it. I told him that I figured that. Fact is that pilots only check mask on preflight so I suspect he found it then. The only other time he would mess with mask is during in flight emergency (there wasn't). The fact is this is a no-go item but I believe pilots at [carrier] are being told to take airplanes to hub stations and make writeups there. My understanding of their fom says that they must report a defect and document it when they find it. There have been numerous incidents here where this has been found not to be the case.
