Narrative:

Our flight plan was J67 to lin, then J189 to ave. We had a wind from the north in excess of 60 KTS. I had been looking at our bid sheet for jan and had placed it on the approach plate holder on the control column. On the medium large transport X, the yoke covers the HSI in most positions of the seat. You have full view of the HSI and the 'to/from' flag when the seat is in a forward landing/takeoff position. In cruise I had moved the seat aft to a comfortable position and the yoke fully covered the HSI. In order to see it, I would have to lean forward. Placing my big sheet on the yoke did not help matters either. Inbound to lin I had been referencing the first officer's HSI to monitor our course deviation, then xchking his HSI with mine. I last remember checking my HSI and making a slight course correction to the west. I then heard the first officer say 'ok, it's 144 degrees outbnd and I'm going to avenal.' I said 'ok,' but what I failed to notice is that we had passed overhead lin. I did not see the to/from arrow shift. I checked the first officer's HSI and it showed us east of course (J189) and my HSI showed us east of course. However I was still set up on the 166 inbound to lin, and was flying outbnd. I should have been on the 144 degree out of lin. Of course the north wind did not help matters. ZOA asked if we were intercepting the arwy. We said we were. They advised that they showed us approximately 7 mi west of course. It was then that I realized what had happened and corrected to intercept J189.

Narrative: OUR FLT PLAN WAS J67 TO LIN, THEN J189 TO AVE. WE HAD A WIND FROM THE N IN EXCESS OF 60 KTS. I HAD BEEN LOOKING AT OUR BID SHEET FOR JAN AND HAD PLACED IT ON THE APCH PLATE HOLDER ON THE CONTROL COLUMN. ON THE MLG X, THE YOKE COVERS THE HSI IN MOST POSITIONS OF THE SEAT. YOU HAVE FULL VIEW OF THE HSI AND THE 'TO/FROM' FLAG WHEN THE SEAT IS IN A FORWARD LNDG/TKOF POS. IN CRUISE I HAD MOVED THE SEAT AFT TO A COMFORTABLE POS AND THE YOKE FULLY COVERED THE HSI. IN ORDER TO SEE IT, I WOULD HAVE TO LEAN FORWARD. PLACING MY BIG SHEET ON THE YOKE DID NOT HELP MATTERS EITHER. INBND TO LIN I HAD BEEN REFERENCING THE F/O'S HSI TO MONITOR OUR COURSE DEVIATION, THEN XCHKING HIS HSI WITH MINE. I LAST REMEMBER CHKING MY HSI AND MAKING A SLIGHT COURSE CORRECTION TO THE W. I THEN HEARD THE F/O SAY 'OK, IT'S 144 DEGS OUTBND AND I'M GOING TO AVENAL.' I SAID 'OK,' BUT WHAT I FAILED TO NOTICE IS THAT WE HAD PASSED OVERHEAD LIN. I DID NOT SEE THE TO/FROM ARROW SHIFT. I CHKED THE F/O'S HSI AND IT SHOWED US E OF COURSE (J189) AND MY HSI SHOWED US E OF COURSE. HOWEVER I WAS STILL SET UP ON THE 166 INBND TO LIN, AND WAS FLYING OUTBND. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE 144 DEG OUT OF LIN. OF COURSE THE N WIND DID NOT HELP MATTERS. ZOA ASKED IF WE WERE INTERCEPTING THE ARWY. WE SAID WE WERE. THEY ADVISED THAT THEY SHOWED US APPROX 7 MI W OF COURSE. IT WAS THEN THAT I REALIZED WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND CORRECTED TO INTERCEPT J189.
