Narrative:

Upon receiving pushback clearance we pushed back into an uncontrolled ramp area. Anticipating an immediate taxi clearance to the active runway we positioned the aircraft onto taxiway west just short of the inner. This came to the attention of the ground controller when another aircraft was unable to use taxiway west because our aircraft was in the way. The reason we weren't issued a taxi clearance was because a center release time was imposed on our departure. Very often in boston there is no mention of a delay until the pushback clearance has been issued and accomplished. It would seem prudent to use gate holds in these situations because after we push back there is no place to go.
