Narrative:

Our flight # was air carrier X ffb and there was air carrier Y ffb on the same frequency. ZDC issued a clearance to ffb, 'cross 30 southwest kenton (VOR) at FL240.' we read back the clearance and began a descent to FL240. After double-checking the nanci 2 arrival, we realized that kenton VOR was not on the arrival. We stopped our descent at 24700' and climbed back to 25000'. We immediately asked ZDC to verify the clearance. It was then that he said, 'air carrier Y ffb, cross 30 southwest of kenton at FL240.' air carrier Y ffb responded for the first time and acknowledged the clearance. We then asked ZDC to verify our clearance. He said to maintain 25000'. The problem arose when he first issued the clearance and said 'ffb,' which was our flight #, but had no airline prefix. The clearance was meant for air carrier Y ffb.

Title: ACR MLG ALT DEVIATION EXCURSION FROM CLRNC ALT IN RESPONSE TO WRONG CALL SIGN. ARTCC USING FLT NUMBER ONLY WITHOUT COMPANY NAME AND THERE WERE 2 SAME FLT NUMBERS IN THE AREA.

Narrative: OUR FLT # WAS ACR X FFB AND THERE WAS ACR Y FFB ON THE SAME FREQ. ZDC ISSUED A CLRNC TO FFB, 'CROSS 30 SW KENTON (VOR) AT FL240.' WE READ BACK THE CLRNC AND BEGAN A DSCNT TO FL240. AFTER DOUBLE-CHKING THE NANCI 2 ARR, WE REALIZED THAT KENTON VOR WAS NOT ON THE ARR. WE STOPPED OUR DSCNT AT 24700' AND CLBED BACK TO 25000'. WE IMMEDIATELY ASKED ZDC TO VERIFY THE CLRNC. IT WAS THEN THAT HE SAID, 'ACR Y FFB, CROSS 30 SW OF KENTON AT FL240.' ACR Y FFB RESPONDED FOR THE FIRST TIME AND ACKNOWLEDGED THE CLRNC. WE THEN ASKED ZDC TO VERIFY OUR CLRNC. HE SAID TO MAINTAIN 25000'. THE PROB AROSE WHEN HE FIRST ISSUED THE CLRNC AND SAID 'FFB,' WHICH WAS OUR FLT #, BUT HAD NO AIRLINE PREFIX. THE CLRNC WAS MEANT FOR ACR Y FFB.
