Narrative:

Landing at mohave. Called in at 20 mi to get instructions/runway. Again at 4 mi. Tower trying to locate (communicate) with other aircraft in pattern. Told tower we had traffic on downwind. We were landing base, runway 7. Tower also seemed to be using dual frequencys as other conversation was occurring, could only hear tower side of conversation. We were descending at 150 KTS approximately. Passing downwind path at 6-700' AGL dropped gear and rapidly lost speed. We were cleared to land #2. As we turned base to final, tower questioned identity and we confirmed. He hesitated a few moments, then advised us that we should have advised him if we were altering the landing sequence. Apparently the tower thought we would follow the slow downwind traffic, and we thought we were #2 behind the unseen, unheard aircraft. Very poor control by tower and we should have queried our #1 traffic location.

Title: CPR PLT REPORTS POOR CTL TWR PROC DURING LNDG SEQUENCE WITH INADEQUATE INSTRUCTIONS AND CTL. MAKES NON STANDARD ENTRY TO TRAFFIC PATTERN AND ALTERS LNDG SEQUENCE AS HE CUTS OUT TRAFFIC ON DOWNWIND.

Narrative: LNDG AT MOHAVE. CALLED IN AT 20 MI TO GET INSTRUCTIONS/RWY. AGAIN AT 4 MI. TWR TRYING TO LOCATE (COMMUNICATE) WITH OTHER ACFT IN PATTERN. TOLD TWR WE HAD TFC ON DOWNWIND. WE WERE LNDG BASE, RWY 7. TWR ALSO SEEMED TO BE USING DUAL FREQS AS OTHER CONVERSATION WAS OCCURRING, COULD ONLY HEAR TWR SIDE OF CONVERSATION. WE WERE DESCENDING AT 150 KTS APPROX. PASSING DOWNWIND PATH AT 6-700' AGL DROPPED GEAR AND RAPIDLY LOST SPEED. WE WERE CLRED TO LAND #2. AS WE TURNED BASE TO FINAL, TWR QUESTIONED IDENTITY AND WE CONFIRMED. HE HESITATED A FEW MOMENTS, THEN ADVISED US THAT WE SHOULD HAVE ADVISED HIM IF WE WERE ALTERING THE LNDG SEQUENCE. APPARENTLY THE TWR THOUGHT WE WOULD FOLLOW THE SLOW DOWNWIND TFC, AND WE THOUGHT WE WERE #2 BEHIND THE UNSEEN, UNHEARD ACFT. VERY POOR CTL BY TWR AND WE SHOULD HAVE QUERIED OUR #1 TFC LOCATION.
