Narrative:

General aviation aircraft was cleared to cross the airport west to east, right to left from my position. Cross south of tower was tower clearance I recall hearing just before we received takeoff clearance. Our takeoff was normal. Climb was rapid with body angle approximately 20 degree. The lights of the GA aircraft were visible but other cockpit duties precluded continuous tracking. As we approached 1500' MSL the aircraft suddenly became visible in the landing light beam and just as quickly moved to my 9 O'clock and level position. Our flight paths came very close, probably less than 500'. I do not recall the tower pointing out this traffic to us but I did hear them clear him over the airport. I believe the tower misestimated our climb angle and how quickly we would reach 1500'. Also, I was not aware of the altitude of the GA aircraft. Not advised by the tower. Since this was in a TCA, tower controled VFR conditions, I assumed adequate separation would be assured, it was not.

Title: FLT CREW OF MLG IN STEEP CLIMB AFTER ROTATION AT SEA HAD NEAR NMAC WITH SMA AT 1500 MSL.

Narrative: GENERAL AVIATION ACFT WAS CLRED TO CROSS THE ARPT W TO E, RIGHT TO LEFT FROM MY POSITION. CROSS S OF TWR WAS TWR CLRNC I RECALL HEARING JUST BEFORE WE RECEIVED TKOF CLRNC. OUR TKOF WAS NORMAL. CLIMB WAS RAPID WITH BODY ANGLE APPROX 20 DEG. THE LIGHTS OF THE GA ACFT WERE VISIBLE BUT OTHER COCKPIT DUTIES PRECLUDED CONTINUOUS TRACKING. AS WE APCHED 1500' MSL THE ACFT SUDDENLY BECAME VISIBLE IN THE LNDG LIGHT BEAM AND JUST AS QUICKLY MOVED TO MY 9 O'CLOCK AND LEVEL POSITION. OUR FLT PATHS CAME VERY CLOSE, PROBABLY LESS THAN 500'. I DO NOT RECALL THE TWR POINTING OUT THIS TFC TO US BUT I DID HEAR THEM CLEAR HIM OVER THE ARPT. I BELIEVE THE TWR MISESTIMATED OUR CLIMB ANGLE AND HOW QUICKLY WE WOULD REACH 1500'. ALSO, I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE ALT OF THE GA ACFT. NOT ADVISED BY THE TWR. SINCE THIS WAS IN A TCA, TWR CTLED VFR CONDITIONS, I ASSUMED ADEQUATE SEPARATION WOULD BE ASSURED, IT WAS NOT.
