Narrative:
En route: bwi to avl. Dca approach controller cleared us to climb to FL280. When handed off to ZDC I checked in and stated altitude passing and climbing to 280. Passing through FL275 center asked our altitude and said we were only cleared to FL230. A few mins (1-2) later, center told us to descend to 230, which we did. Center acknowledged altitude on check-in but failed to correct altitude assignment.
