Narrative:

On departure from runway 30L at sjc, there was confusion between cockpit crew members and ATC about departure procedure. Initial altitude given in clearance was FL230; however, the loupe 6 departure specifies specific crossing altitudes and a turn to 120 degrees to circle back over the VOR before proceeding on course. After sjc departure contacted us and advised us about the altitude restriction and the turn, we got on the correct profile. We will be more careful to determine the correct procedure next time.
