Narrative:

Twin oaks is an uncontrolled, unicom field within hio's control zone. Its single runway is 02/20, with all lndgs on 02, unless the wind is greater than 10 KTS from the south. All takeoffs are on 20, regardless of wind. Left traffic for runway 02. I was approaching from the east for landing runway 02 in a fast experimental, two-seat, side-by-side, with a canopy that affords superb visibility. I entered on the crosswind, having just descended from 2000' MSL to the tpa of 1200'. My airspeed was between 100 and 120 KTS. I announced by crosswind entry on unicom about 1/4 mi east of the runway centerline. I was intensely scanning for other traffic entering on the 45 for the downwind and saw no one. Twin oaks had a 'fuel special' that weekend which was sure to attract traffic, so I scanned ever harder than usual. At the pumps, the pilot of a red classic tail dragger, high wing, sbs, 2-SEATER, slow, walked up to me and said, 'you did see me, didn't you?' I said, 'no'. He said that I had passed just over the top of his aircraft in a 'classic' low wing/high wing situation, on the crosswind. He was not using his radio to monitor or broadcast on unicom. His flight credentials are not known to me. He said he was at 1050-1100' MSL on x-wind, and that, combined with my descent to, but not below, 1200' is why we are still here today. I never saw him, partly because I was looking for 45 degree entry and downwind traffic, not looking for other x-wind entry traffic. Further, in no airplane can the pilot see straight down at the 12 O'clock position due to the engine or other structures. How to prevent? S-turns in climbs and dscnts, with scanning all legs of the traffic pattern. Also, at least monitor unicom (or multicom, ir appropriate), even if you choose not to talk.

I ANNOUNCED BY XWIND ENTRY ON UNICOM ABOUT 1/4 MI EAST OF THE RWY CENTERLINE. I WAS INTENSELY SCANNING FOR OTHER TFC ENTERING ON THE 45 FOR THE DOWNWIND AND SAW NO ONE. I NEVER SAW HIM, PARTLY BECAUSE I WAS LOOKING FOR 45 DEG ENTRY AND DOWNWIND TFC, NOT LOOKING FOR OTHER X-WIND ENTRY TFC. FURTHER, IN NO AIRPLANE CAN THE PLT SEE STRAIGHT DOWN AT THE 12 O'CLOCK POSITION DUE TO THE ENGINE OR OTHER STRUCTURES. HOW TO PREVENT? S-TURNS IN CLIMBS AND DSCNTS, WITH SCANNING ALL LEGS OF THE TFC PATTERN. ALSO, AT LEAST MONITOR UNICOM (OR MULTICOM, IR APPROPRIATE), EVEN IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO TALK.
