Narrative:
On 8/sat/89, small aircraft X was en route to fort collins-loveland airport, and requested assistance from ATC. As small aircraft X approached the mountains west of fort collins-loveland airport at 11500', it was obvious they were too high to cross. X was unable to contact flight control. After several attempts, an intermediary began to relay messages to the ATC. X could hear the xmissions, whereas ATC could not receive from this area the transmission of X. After some time elapsed, X headed to laramie as directed, but returned and landed at walden field. In retrospect, it appears this area is a dead spot in ATC reception capacity. X made a normal landing on walden field and called longmont ATC center to advise of the same landing at walden. The following day X continued on with the flight to fort collins-loveland.

Title: PLT OF SMA HAD PROBLEM COMMUNICATING WITH ZDV FROM LOCATION ON WESTERN SLOPE OF ROCKIES, APPROX 150 MILES WEST OF DENVER.
Narrative: ON 8/SAT/89, SMA X WAS ENRTE TO FORT COLLINS-LOVELAND ARPT, AND REQUESTED ASSISTANCE FROM ATC. AS SMA X APCHED THE MOUNTAINS W OF FORT COLLINS-LOVELAND ARPT AT 11500', IT WAS OBVIOUS THEY WERE TOO HIGH TO CROSS. X WAS UNABLE TO CONTACT FLT CTL. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, AN INTERMEDIARY BEGAN TO RELAY MESSAGES TO THE ATC. X COULD HEAR THE XMISSIONS, WHEREAS ATC COULD NOT RECEIVE FROM THIS AREA THE XMISSION OF X. AFTER SOME TIME ELAPSED, X HEADED TO LARAMIE AS DIRECTED, BUT RETURNED AND LANDED AT WALDEN FIELD. IN RETROSPECT, IT APPEARS THIS AREA IS A DEAD SPOT IN ATC RECEPTION CAPACITY. X MADE A NORMAL LNDG ON WALDEN FIELD AND CALLED LONGMONT ATC CENTER TO ADVISE OF THE SAME LNDG AT WALDEN. THE FOLLOWING DAY X CONTINUED ON WITH THE FLT TO FORT COLLINS-LOVELAND.
