Narrative:

Took off from a private grass strip, not appreciating just how restr the visibility was due to low ceilings and fog. After climbing through a hole in the scud, strip was still visible through holes in the clouds, as was the local uncontrolled airport. As the takeoff was made at the beginning of an extended VFR x-country I decided to land at the aforementioned airport to await better flight conditions and be accessible to a phone to file a VFR flight plan before departing again. Though my aircraft was west/O an operating radio, I had my landing lights on to facilitate my being seen. After landing, I saw a light twin about to land in the opp direction, apparently west/O seeing me. I commenced a go around and about the time I lifted off and veered to the side of the runway, the twin saw me and commenced a go around west/O touching down. I returned to my grass strip to await further WX improvement. I have no idea of the whereabouts of the twin. Though WX was VFR, it was substantially less than the type WX in which either of these aircraft should have been operating under VFR conditions, particularly at this airport. I had been out of small aircraft VFR flying for about 20 yrs until about 3 yrs ago. I consider myself a cautious pilot. But, I have got to get myself more acclimated to this type flying as opposed to the airline flying I have been doing where every facet of the WX into which I am normally flying is analyzed and reported, certainly no one is going to accurately estimate ceilings west/O references or equipment, and visibility estimating references from my strip are few, but a rough guess, in the above case, would have kept me out of the above potentially dangerous situation.

Title: CLOSE PROX GA-SMA GA-SMT. OPPOSITE DIRECTION LNDGS AT NON TWR ARPT.

Narrative: TOOK OFF FROM A PVT GRASS STRIP, NOT APPRECIATING JUST HOW RESTR THE VISIBILITY WAS DUE TO LOW CEILINGS AND FOG. AFTER CLBING THROUGH A HOLE IN THE SCUD, STRIP WAS STILL VISIBLE THROUGH HOLES IN THE CLOUDS, AS WAS THE LCL UNCONTROLLED ARPT. AS THE TKOF WAS MADE AT THE BEGINNING OF AN EXTENDED VFR X-COUNTRY I DECIDED TO LAND AT THE AFOREMENTIONED ARPT TO AWAIT BETTER FLT CONDITIONS AND BE ACCESSIBLE TO A PHONE TO FILE A VFR FLT PLAN BEFORE DEPARTING AGAIN. THOUGH MY ACFT WAS W/O AN OPERATING RADIO, I HAD MY LNDG LIGHTS ON TO FACILITATE MY BEING SEEN. AFTER LNDG, I SAW A LIGHT TWIN ABOUT TO LAND IN THE OPP DIRECTION, APPARENTLY W/O SEEING ME. I COMMENCED A GAR AND ABOUT THE TIME I LIFTED OFF AND VEERED TO THE SIDE OF THE RWY, THE TWIN SAW ME AND COMMENCED A GAR W/O TOUCHING DOWN. I RETURNED TO MY GRASS STRIP TO AWAIT FURTHER WX IMPROVEMENT. I HAVE NO IDEA OF THE WHEREABOUTS OF THE TWIN. THOUGH WX WAS VFR, IT WAS SUBSTANTIALLY LESS THAN THE TYPE WX IN WHICH EITHER OF THESE ACFT SHOULD HAVE BEEN OPERATING UNDER VFR CONDITIONS, PARTICULARLY AT THIS ARPT. I HAD BEEN OUT OF SMA VFR FLYING FOR ABOUT 20 YRS UNTIL ABOUT 3 YRS AGO. I CONSIDER MYSELF A CAUTIOUS PLT. BUT, I HAVE GOT TO GET MYSELF MORE ACCLIMATED TO THIS TYPE FLYING AS OPPOSED TO THE AIRLINE FLYING I HAVE BEEN DOING WHERE EVERY FACET OF THE WX INTO WHICH I AM NORMALLY FLYING IS ANALYZED AND RPTED, CERTAINLY NO ONE IS GOING TO ACCURATELY ESTIMATE CEILINGS W/O REFERENCES OR EQUIP, AND VISIBILITY ESTIMATING REFERENCES FROM MY STRIP ARE FEW, BUT A ROUGH GUESS, IN THE ABOVE CASE, WOULD HAVE KEPT ME OUT OF THE ABOVE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION.
