Narrative:

Started to make second emergency landing, practice, when pilot was too low to complete approach. Suggested he change to a soft field practice landing. He had left gear up to extend glide. Proceeded to make approach with some power and landing gear up. Gear horn didn't sound on closing throttle, red gear light was inoperative. Shouldn't practice emergency gear up approach at a landing field. Too easy to change plans and too many distractions. If practice is done over an open field it is unlikely that a landing would be completed gear up or down. It was changing this procedure and the order of checklist that was the probable cause.
