The lead ramp guide was marshalling us into the gate. While I was concentrating on his directions bringing us into the gate I caught; out of my left peripheral vision; what turned out to be a catering truck crossing directly from left to right in front of the aircraft. I applied hard brake pressure and the aircraft came to a stop. The truck drove on by.
