Narrative:

Immediately after takeoff aircraft began an abrupt yawing motion (no dutch roll effect). Turned off yaw damper switch, then back on. Yawing motion ceased. Continued climb. Shortly thereafter, yawing motion resumed. Cycled yaw damper switch off and on, but with no affect. Reduced power and rate of climb. Check systems and indications. Noted no abnormalities. Advised ATC of intent to return to departure airport (mci) and land. Landed without incidence. No emergency declared. Maintenance found yaw damper coupler bad (failed rate gyro). Replaced unit. Departed again and proceeded to destination without incidence.
