Narrative:

Flight established FL330 (chop at FL310 and too heavy for FL350) tracking outbnd on J18 between stj and sln (stj 236 degree right). Controller told us to cross sln FL350. We acknowledged and relaxed. When my stj reading (DME) was indicating about halfway between the 2 facs, the controller asked if we had received the crossing clearance. We confirmed that we had. We had started to look up the inbound bearing frequency, etc, for sln, but were interrupted with, '...climb now to FL350!' of course we immediately complied with the clearance. After leveling FL350 we had time to sort things out. One side of the chart shows the distance between stj and sln as 240. The other side (hi 1) shows 141. (I was using the hi 2 side). I thought that over 100 mi remained. We made our crossing only because of the controller's alertness and assertiveness! Note: I can see one error happening on the map, but 2? If you add the individual DME distances, you get 140, not 141.

Title: FLT CLEARED TO CROSS SLN AT FL350. MISCALCULATED MILEAGE TO SLN. CTLR INTERVENED, CROSSING WAS ACCOMPLISHED.

Narrative: FLT ESTABLISHED FL330 (CHOP AT FL310 AND TOO HEAVY FOR FL350) TRACKING OUTBND ON J18 BTWN STJ AND SLN (STJ 236 DEG R). CTLR TOLD US TO CROSS SLN FL350. WE ACKNOWLEDGED AND RELAXED. WHEN MY STJ READING (DME) WAS INDICATING ABOUT HALFWAY BTWN THE 2 FACS, THE CTLR ASKED IF WE HAD RECEIVED THE XING CLRNC. WE CONFIRMED THAT WE HAD. WE HAD STARTED TO LOOK UP THE INBND BEARING FREQ, ETC, FOR SLN, BUT WERE INTERRUPTED WITH, '...CLB NOW TO FL350!' OF COURSE WE IMMEDIATELY COMPLIED WITH THE CLRNC. AFTER LEVELING FL350 WE HAD TIME TO SORT THINGS OUT. ONE SIDE OF THE CHART SHOWS THE DISTANCE BTWN STJ AND SLN AS 240. THE OTHER SIDE (HI 1) SHOWS 141. (I WAS USING THE HI 2 SIDE). I THOUGHT THAT OVER 100 MI REMAINED. WE MADE OUR XING ONLY BECAUSE OF THE CTLR'S ALERTNESS AND ASSERTIVENESS! NOTE: I CAN SEE ONE ERROR HAPPENING ON THE MAP, BUT 2? IF YOU ADD THE INDIVIDUAL DME DISTANCES, YOU GET 140, NOT 141.
