Narrative:

Climbing to 8000' as assigned aircraft began to ice. I asked to continue to 10000' and controller said something like, 'ok, I'll work that out with (center or griffiss a--I can't recall which).' watching ice build I heard what I wanted to hear (clearance to above) and was at 8300' and climbing when approach woke me up. From now on I'll holler earlier about ice, even if only potential.

Title: PLT OF SMA ENCOUNTERED ICING CONDITIONS, REQUESTED CLIMB TO HIGHER. CONCERNED WITH THE ICE BUILDING, PLT THOUGHT HE HEARD CLRNC TO CLIMB. DURING CLIMB CTLR ADVISE HE HAD LEFT HIS ALT WITHOUT CLRNC.

WATCHING ICE BUILD I HEARD WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR (CLRNC TO ABOVE) AND WAS AT 8300' AND CLBING WHEN APCH WOKE ME UP. FROM NOW ON I'LL HOLLER EARLIER ABOUT ICE, EVEN IF ONLY POTENTIAL.
