Narrative:

Tower gave takeoff instructions to aircraft as immediate left turn to 180 degrees, climb to 2500', and contact departure. Departure gave new heading to 090 degrees. During handoff to departure control we were informed to return to 2000' altitude. It was obvious that day tower had not informed departure control that our assigned altitude was 2500' MSL making it appear to day departure control that we were 500' above altitude.
