Narrative:

ATC asked if we had traffic at 12 O'clock. I confirmed that I had traffic at that position. ATC cleared us to climb VFR and stay below that traffic. As we climbed, we spotted the widebody transport at 2 O'clock. We leveled off to pass approximately 800-1000' below the widebody transport. ATC gave improper position of the traffic and I misidented the traffic. The traffic I saw at 12 O'clock was not close enough to see the air carrier.
