Narrative:
I had informed the tower of my desire to practice short approachs; so to provide more separation between me and the other aircraft in the pattern; I was told to do a left 360 degree turn on downwind. After completing the turn; the tower told me that I was to land #3; after the aircraft on a 1 mi final. I saw an airplane on final and told the tower I had the traffic in sight. The tower then cleared me for a short approach landing. As I was getting ready to turn final for landing; I was passed by another aircraft; apparently the aircraft which I was supposed to be following. It performed a go around; oblivious to our improper separation. This occurrence was mainly due to my lack of attention to the actual clearance I had received. I heard that I should look for traffic; found an aircraft; and assumed that it was the traffic I was looking for. In the future; I will confirm how many aircraft are to land before me; and ensure I am aware of all their position.

Title: SMALL SINGLE ENG ACFT PRACTICING SHORT APPROACH PROCEDURES AT LAF WAS INSTRUCTED TO FOLLOW TRAFFIC ON A ONE-MILE FINAL; TURNED BASE FOLLOWING THE WRONG AIRCRAFT; RESULTING IN AN ATC INITIATED GO-AROUND TO ANOTHER AIRCRAFT.
Narrative: I HAD INFORMED THE TWR OF MY DESIRE TO PRACTICE SHORT APCHS; SO TO PROVIDE MORE SEPARATION BTWN ME AND THE OTHER ACFT IN THE PATTERN; I WAS TOLD TO DO A L 360 DEG TURN ON DOWNWIND. AFTER COMPLETING THE TURN; THE TWR TOLD ME THAT I WAS TO LAND #3; AFTER THE ACFT ON A 1 MI FINAL. I SAW AN AIRPLANE ON FINAL AND TOLD THE TWR I HAD THE TFC IN SIGHT. THE TWR THEN CLRED ME FOR A SHORT APCH LNDG. AS I WAS GETTING READY TO TURN FINAL FOR LNDG; I WAS PASSED BY ANOTHER ACFT; APPARENTLY THE ACFT WHICH I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FOLLOWING. IT PERFORMED A GAR; OBLIVIOUS TO OUR IMPROPER SEPARATION. THIS OCCURRENCE WAS MAINLY DUE TO MY LACK OF ATTN TO THE ACTUAL CLRNC I HAD RECEIVED. I HEARD THAT I SHOULD LOOK FOR TFC; FOUND AN ACFT; AND ASSUMED THAT IT WAS THE TFC I WAS LOOKING FOR. IN THE FUTURE; I WILL CONFIRM HOW MANY ACFT ARE TO LAND BEFORE ME; AND ENSURE I AM AWARE OF ALL THEIR POS.
