Narrative:

I landed at [the airport] in a piper archer III using an IFR flight plan. It was a training flight with three people on board; with me as the flight instructor. It was only my second time at the airport so I was not very familiar with the airport taxiways and runways. We were given radar vectors by approach to intercept the localizer for the ILS which we did well. We landed and exited on taxiway G. Immediately after exiting the runway on taxiway G; I was instructed by the tower to turn 'left on taxiway G; cross runway xx left; no delay; traffic on short final for xx left'. After I read back the instruction to tower; the same controller gave me another instruction saying; 'turn left on G; cross runway xx left; expedite; aircraft on short final'. Being unfamiliar with the airport as well as being pressed for time due to tower's instruction; I immediately began taxiing without first referencing to my airport diagram. I failed to realize first of all that I was already taxiing on taxiway G. I mistook runway xx left for taxiway G so upon approaching runway xx left from taxiway G I turned left thinking it was taxiway G. I also misunderstood their instruction thinking that after I turned left on taxiway G that I was suppose to turn left on runway xx left to which I did. To my confusion; the tower advised me that I was taxiing back on runway xx left which was also an active runway. I then saw a yellow aircraft on short final right in front of me. The yellow aircraft was then instructed to go around and I immediately exited on taxiway D from runway xx left. To my confusion; I then queried the tower by asking them; 'I thought you told me to turn left on xx left?' to which they replied to the negative. Due to the short amount of time given to me from the time of landing to the taxi instructions; I failed to review my airport diagram. At the same time I misunderstood the instructions given to me since I was instructed to expedite my taxi which led to the runway incursion incident. After exiting runway xx left; I apologized heavily to tower for the misunderstanding. I also apologized heavily to ground for the miscommunication to which I was told to 'not worry about it'. I am writing this report in the hopes that we can learn from this experience to improve aviation safety.

Title: A Flight Instructor and student pilot of a Piper PA28 became disoriented after exiting the runway when ATC provided taxi instructions with an expedite qualifier. The instructor inadvertently turned onto an active runway; causing ATC to issue go-around instructions to an aircraft on short final. The instructor then taxied clear of the runway.
