Narrative:

On 3/xx/89, I was working ord southwest departure control in the ord TRACON. WX was VFR, arrival runway's were 27L/27R/32L. Light transport Z departed ord heading 180 degrees climbing to 5000'. Light transport Y departed ord heading 220 degrees climbing to 5000'. Air carrier X departed ord heading 240 degrees climbing to 5000'. Air carrier X was climbed to 6000' to go over the top of light transport Y. I inadvertently climbed light transport Y to 8000', it should have been light transport Z. After making a pointout to chicago center, it was brought to my attention that light transport Y was climbing above 5000'. Light transport Y was descended back to 50' and traffic was called to air carrier X. Air carrier X called the traffic in sight and visibility sep was issued to air carrier X. Similar call signs was factor in this situation. Prevention of this situation would be not using similar call signs at the same flight times from the same airport.

LTT Y DEPARTED ORD HDG 220 DEGS CLBING TO 5000'. ACR X DEPARTED ORD HDG 240 DEGS CLBING TO 5000'. ACR X WAS CLBED TO 6000' TO GO OVER THE TOP OF LTT Y. I INADVERTENTLY CLBED LTT Y TO 8000', IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN LTT Z. AFTER MAKING A POINTOUT TO CHICAGO CENTER, IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTN THAT LTT Y WAS CLBING ABOVE 5000'. LTT Y WAS DSNDED BACK TO 50' AND TFC WAS CALLED TO ACR X. ACR X CALLED THE TFC IN SIGHT AND VIS SEP WAS ISSUED TO ACR X. SIMILAR CALL SIGNS WAS FACTOR IN THIS SITUATION. PREVENTION OF THIS SITUATION WOULD BE NOT USING SIMILAR CALL SIGNS AT THE SAME FLT TIMES FROM THE SAME ARPT.
