Narrative:

Passing 12000' MSL on climb out, with climb power set and myself flying, a master caution light and overheat/detector light came on. The captain announced the problem and performed the applicable memory item. The overheat light went out as the throttle was retarded to idle. I leveled off at 13000' MSL. The captain requested and received clearance for a turn back to rochester and descent. The captain assumed flying duties and I accomplished the engine overheat, single engine preliminary landing and single engine final landing emergency checklists. The captain made an uneventful 15 degree flap approach and landing, with the #1 throttle at idle. I shut down the #1 engine during landing rollout. We cleared the runway and had the fire response team visually inspect the aircraft. We then taxied to the gate. The problem was purely mechanical. We encountered no problems with ATC or WX. Human performance was good, despite having been on duty for 10 hours and dealing with severe WX and delays. Judgement, decisions, actions and communications were all good.
