Narrative:

Climbing through 12000' the master caution and overheat light on the glareshield came on and the left engine overheat light was illuminated. With the first officer guarding the right throttle, I brought the left throttle to idle as called for in the checklist, and the light went out. I then conducted a test of the overheat detector and it tested normally. The first officer leveled the aircraft at 13000' and I asked for and received a clearance and descent back to roc. I assumed flying control and the first officer accomplished the rest of the checklists and we made a 15 degree flap landing as the left engine was at idle. As we were about to turn off the runway I directed the first officer to shut down the left engine as we did not need it anymore. We then stopped on the taxiway and the fire department inspected the engine. We then taxied to the gate. The end overheat was the only problem. ATC service was excellent and I feel that the first officer and I did everything nominally.

Narrative: CLBING THROUGH 12000' THE MASTER CAUTION AND OVERHEAT LIGHT ON THE GLARESHIELD CAME ON AND THE LEFT ENG OVERHEAT LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. WITH THE F/O GUARDING THE RIGHT THROTTLE, I BROUGHT THE LEFT THROTTLE TO IDLE AS CALLED FOR IN THE CHKLIST, AND THE LIGHT WENT OUT. I ASSUMED FLYING CONTROL AND THE F/O ACCOMPLISHED THE REST OF THE CHKLISTS AND WE MADE A 15 DEG FLAP LNDG AS THE LEFT ENG WAS AT IDLE. AS WE WERE ABOUT TO TURN OFF THE RWY I DIRECTED THE F/O TO SHUT DOWN THE LEFT ENG AS WE DID NOT NEED IT ANYMORE. WE THEN STOPPED ON THE TXWY AND THE FIRE DEPT INSPECTED THE ENG. WE THEN TAXIED TO THE GATE. THE END OVERHEAT WAS THE ONLY PROB. ATC SVC WAS EXCELLENT AND I FEEL THAT THE F/O AND I DID EVERYTHING NOMINALLY.
