Narrative:

Reported 11 miles out requesting to land with `zulu' which stated runway in use 10. Told to report over river, cleared to land runway 10. Reported crossing river and began pattern for runway 28. Saw traffic while discussing with tower confusion over north # because 2# on field and realized my mistake. Told tower and requested turn to use right traffic for runway 10. Right traffic approved and completed with uneventful landing. Problem: pilot preconceived runway 28 as 10 as far away as ATIS heard and was preoccupied with problem of inoperative gyro. Gyro reported for repair.
