Narrative:

After takeoff at approximately 1;400 ft; a master warning and tail compartment temperature high warning light was observed. We accomplished the memory action items and declared an emergency. We advised ATC that we would like to return to [departure airport] for a landing. We completed checklist items and returned for an overweight landing. Our landing weight was 133;000 lbs. The emergency fire trucks checked the tail compartment area for heat and advised us that the only detectable heat was coming from the engines. We returned to the gate and deplaned the passengers.
