Narrative:

I was the pilot flying the approach and landing to phx 25L. It was hot (101'f); so we rolled to G2 high-speed turn-off and made the turn-off at under 80 KTS. Once we made the turn-off; I transferred controls to the captain. Just as we were making the positive control transfer; tower gave us instructions to make a right on foxtrot; left on foxtrot 8; and hold short of 25R on foxtrot 8. Just as I copied and read back the instructions; I looked up and we were already past foxtrot. I said to the captain; 'we just passed foxtrot.' we slammed on the brakes and our nose was just past the hold short for 25R. Tower gave us instructions to stop where we were. We did so and after an airplane took off; we were given instructions to cross 25R and contact ground. Ground gave us taxi instructions to gate and gave us a phone number and told us to contact tower for a possible 'pilot deviation.' once we got to the gate and finished our shutdown/post flight check list; and duties permitted; captain contacted tower via phone. Tower said they would review the tapes and get back to him. Tower had not contacted us before we took off to complete our 3 day sequence. If an immediate turn after turning off runway is required; tower should indicate so. It is busy when there are instructions given and pilots are transferring controls; especially if there is an immediate action required.
