Narrative:

This was the first leg of the day; a -300 model; with a history of leading edge slat indication problems on forward panel. MEL said to verify with overhead panel that must function properly and it did. On takeoff; the forward leading edge in transit amber light came on and the green went out; as described in earlier logbook write-ups; but now there was an actual indication on the overhead showing the number five and six slats were retracted. We aborted at V1 due to not feeling confident the aircraft would fly.
