Narrative:

On takeoff from roc on a flight to bos we climbed through 2500' MSL and the F/a in the rear jump seat called the cockpit to report that 1 smoke detector had gone off, she had disabled it. She further noticed a blue haze in the cabin and as we spoke the other smoke detector went off. I elected to return to the field. The landing was made as an overweight landing, but requiring no inspection. The landing was smooth and brakes were not applied until 60 KTS. No emergency was declared, no priority handling was requested, crash equipment was present but not called out by the crew. No fire was ever detected and all cockpit instruments were normal. When we turned off the runway the right generator dropped off the line. The aircraft had a 5 day history of right generator problems. We had flown the aircraft the previous night and had experienced a generator problem on 2 out of 3 legs. The problem had been written up and worked on in cle and roc. Supplemental information from acn 99291: we ferried the aircraft back to pit for further maintenance action.
