Narrative:

I had been awake for a period of 40 hours and was given a reserve assignment at 2 am after flying an all night flight the previous evening. I was unable to accept the assignment due to major fatigue. It is amazing to me that a pilot with a regular flying schedule cannot be scheduled for or fly two early morning flights; yet a reserve pilot can be scheduled to fly an all night flight followed by an early assignment the next day and is expected to be adequately rested. This process should be stopped as it is very unsafe not only to the aviation community but to the individual pilot as well.
