Narrative:

I was working local control 1, a newly checked out controller was working local controller 2, the local 2 controller had small aircraft X on final for my runway. I had small aircraft Y in position for departure on the same runway. The aircraft on final went around the other aircraft departed. There was a minimum of sep. The contributing factors were high vol traffic for both controllers and it was easy to be distracted, which caused a coordination error. A possible solution might be not to allow newly checked out controllers to work positions that are so dependent upon each other. Another solution would be for the area supervisor to be in the tower cabin attendant to provide assistance during high vol traffic.
