Narrative:
Climbing through approximately FL260; number 2 engine began to surge with both autopilot and autothrottles connected. Pilot flying disconnected autopilot and autothrottles and called for engine limit surge stall checklist; which was completed. During engine surges N1 limit was exceeded; emergency declared with ATC; and aircraft returned to point of departure without incident.

Title: A B737-NG flight crew declared an emergency and returned to their departure airport after experiencing surges from the right engine in excess of the N1 limit.
Narrative: Climbing through approximately FL260; number 2 engine began to surge with both autopilot and autothrottles connected. Pilot flying disconnected autopilot and autothrottles and called for engine limit surge stall checklist; which was completed. During engine surges N1 limit was exceeded; emergency declared with ATC; and aircraft returned to point of departure without incident.
