Narrative:

Base leg on visual to runway 25L at lax. Given a heading of 150 degrees and cleared to 4000'. Told us to follow an small transport low. When on base medium large transport Y passed over us at approximately 500'. He stated that medium large transport Y had visibility on us. I was looking at medium large transport Y close on us and the sunlight was such that it appeared it was not moving or actually seemed to be flying formation with us. Approach did not point out medium large transport Y till we were very close. Although we were at least 500' vertical from medium large transport Y, he was not pointed out to us. He tended to distract us from our obligation of making a visibility to 25. Had approach informed us of medium large transport Y earlier and gave us his altitude, we would not have been distracted observing him.
